Facing History and Ourselves: Creating a Trove of Digital Assets

In 2012 Facing History and Ourselves set out to fundamentally change its management and use of its media collections. In the past four years, this educational non-profit has done just that. Starting with inaccessible legacy media, inconsistent distribution mechanisms, and media management challenges, Facing History has successfully digitized its legacy media, established policies for born digital production, implemented and rolled out a DAM, established a taxonomy, and integrated with a web content management system and an online video platform. In this presentation, Eva Radding from Facing History will talk about the process, challenges and value of this transformation and what it has meant to Facing History. Eva will be joined by Karl Facredyn from Orange Logic, the company behind Cortex, the DAM Facing History implemented. Karl will discuss some of the key challenges Orange Logic faced in meeting Facing History’s requirements, how they navigated toward solutions and the lessons learned along the way.

Eva RaddingEva Radding
Eva Radding joined Facing History and Ourselves in 2007 as a librarian, cataloging (among other things) in-house video for the library catalog. In leading Facing History’s DAMS project from its inception in 2013, she oversaw digitization of video materials, created a specialized taxonomy, configured workflows in collaboration with colleagues throughout the organization, and even organized a contest that led to naming the archive. Now, as Digital Archive and Library Systems Manager, Eva is responsible for all aspects of the DAMS’ operation. She coordinates tagging, develops policies, trains staff, creates documentation, and troubleshoots technical issues.

Eva holds an MSLIS from Simmons College, a Public and Nonprofit MBA from Boston University, and a BA from Yale University.
